PSI Launches First Nature Aware Underwriting Toolkit for Insurers

GaiaSicura contributes to the PSI’s first Nature Aware Underwriting Toolkit for Insurers.

UNEP FI's Principles for Sustainable Insurance Initiative (PSI) has launched the first edition of the PSI Nature-Aware Underwriting Toolkit, a practical resource designed to help insurers better understand how ecosystem degradation and restoration can influence climate-related risks and insurance outcomes.

At GaiaSicura, we are delighted to have contributed to this pioneering initiative. We believe that integrating nature related considerations into insurance underwriting is an important step towards building a more resilient and sustainable insurance sector, and we are proud to support the PSI in advancing this work.

At the heart of the toolkit is the PSI Climate-Nature Nexus Atlas, winner of Nature/Biodiversity Initiative of the Year at the InsuranceERM Climate Risk & Sustainability Awards 2026. Drawing on extensive scientific and intergovernmental evidence, the Atlas maps how 108 ecosystem types influence 12 climate-related perils. The Atlas highlights where ecosystem degradation can amplify risk and where healthy and restored ecosystems can help reduce risk, providing insurers with new insights into the connections between climate, nature, and insurability.

An interactive interface enables users to explore these relationships across different perils, countries and lines of business, supporting activities ranging from risk screening and prioritisation to assessment, integration and monitoring. The accompanying Application Guide explains the Atlas methodology and provides practical guidance on applying its insights within underwriting and risk assessment processes.

The toolkit also includes the PSI Nature-Aware Underwriting Handbook, a modular engagement resource designed to build understanding of nature-related risks and opportunities across underwriting, actuarial, exposure management and risk functions. Structured around three pillars - Education, Engagement and Exploration - the Handbook helps promote internal dialogue and capacity-building on nature-related issues across insurance teams.

Together, these resources provide a structured approach for understanding how ecosystem extent and condition can influence climate-related perils and insurance-relevant outcomes. By translating emerging climate-nature science into practical underwriting insights, the toolkit helps insurers strengthen their understanding of risk and integrate nature-related considerations into decision-making.

The toolkit is available to PSI Signatories through the PSI Member Area.
